  • Research your new community
  • Obtain a floor plan and decide what to keep
  • Start a household inventory
  • Get estimates from at least three moving companies
  • Review homeowners insurance coverage
  • Create a moving file for receipts and documents
  • Arrange transfer of children’s school records

Six Weeks Before You Move
  • Notify friends, creditors, subscriptions, professionals, and schools
  • Contact the IRS or your CPA for moving tax deductions
  • If relocating for work, contact your employer to see if any costs will be covered
  • Begin donations or garage sale planning
  • Choose a mover and confirm insurance coverage
  • Update address with financial institutions and services
  • Research healthcare providers in your new area
